Morning everyone! I need your opinion on one small subject. I'm now setting up Paddle, and it has an option of including sales tax in the price or putting it on top. So basically you can make pricing 9.99 + tax or 9.99 including tax ( which means you get way less money ). What is the best approach? In your services do you include tax in the price or put it on top?

Rauno
I think I would approach it like Gumroad (D. Vassallo) example here. Paddle can do the same. So basically let Paddle handle the tax and add it to the price depending on the buyer’s country.
Oleks
Aha, that is exactly what I was asking about 🙂 Thank you, Rauno!
Kirill
Is there a payment gateway that handles these region specific taxes itself?

Hi all, name’s Kimsia. Based in Singapore 🇸🇬

I’m software solopreneur like most everyone here. unlike most people, i haven’t hit any revenue for my SaaS. I am funding the SaaS by having customer for my custom workflow software services.

That business is providing me with abt 7.5k USD p/m. The work’s 100% remote and increasingly async.

I just finished tennis practice :tennis: and now going for gym after answering some customer query. I love my lifestyle and wouldn’t trade it for the world.. unless the money’s like 3x and I can work async. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hope to update my SaaS build over the next few weeks

Hi Solo Founders!

After spending the last year creating two web sites that pretty much failed to attract users (http://mememestocks.com|mememestocks.com and http://memeshare.ai|memeshare.ai), I have started working on an SAAS that I currently call 12T. At least until I find a better name…

12T is designed for small businesses owners who want to delegate complex tasks to employees. They can create checklists and simple forms, and then assign them to employees. The checklists can include additional descriptions and photos for each step to make them easy to execute. The owner will be notified when a checklist has been completed, or when it is overdue.

I am currently creating wireframes using Balsamiq:

Sup Tim! I wonder how can you validate business owners problem without building a mobile app first?
MicroFounder
Yes, that's a problem indeed :grinning: My plan is to create a mobile web version first and then find some people who try it. I spent the last few months reading forums for small businesses and restaurateurs, and I have some ideas where I could find users.
Rauno
Very interesting! Creating a web version first is a good idea!

Wrote down some basic MVP + advanced features list, subject to change of course

SaaS Expenses Tracker

MVP:
- List of all tools and their subscription pricing
- Categorisation of most heavily / least used or maybe “needed”, “just trying out” etc.
- Recommendation of alternatives
- Calculation of wether the tool makes you profit
- Clear value in seeing where money goes in all these small tools
- “Target” goal by end of year, month, show clients how much money they can save by replacing / cancelling tools

Advanced:
- Smart reminders of rarely used, not needed, just trying out subscriptions
- Auto categorisation
- Chrome extension to detect when you are on stripe payment, any type of payment page (show popup “Are you adding a business expense?”
- Monthly / Yearly summaries
- Virtual cards like Spendesk? (too distruptive for micro saas IMO)

Dave
Probably not mvp but if you got it off the ground maybe you could negotiate for discounts
Antonio
Thats really good! Thank you a lot!
Jesse
Did you know Stripe has API’s that allow you to issue and manage virtual debit cards?

Daniel is on Show HN today with KTool:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=326...

I’m using my Kindle every day to read books, so this looks very interesting to me.

I often think that I want to read this blog post, HN topic, or newsletter but I rarely get to them. Maybe it’s because when I’m on my computer/phone I have so many distractions. Email, Twitter…

The preview tool is also very cool!

Reminds me Mailbrew ($20k MRR). I know it’s a different thing, but a bit similar feeling to it.

Where Mailbrew takes different dopamine-filled social content and builds a nice calm email, KTool takes different dopamine-filled content and gives me a quiet reading time on my Kindle.
Radan
I bought KTool very soon after seeing it here . Really great work. I’ve sent quite a few articles from various sites with it and the conversion quality was always great. :ok_hand:

What tools are people using to build their landing pages?

I am a domain buying addict .. by now I have 45 domains :joy: and I had the same question - what tools do people use to build landing pages…

there are quite a few modern day tools out there
webflow, carrd, unbounce etc…

.. but that would not be fun :stuck_out_tongue: so I set out to build a landing page builder. sneak peak here -
David
my first observation is that it said ‘loading’ for a second before rendering over the next second or two - is that fast enough for a landing page?
Vishal
Thanks for flagging
its work in progress - no where ready to launch at the moment
David
Such a bummer that modern JavaScript frameworks appear to be in a perpetually vulnerable state due to the number of dependencies #stackpickingtime
Rauno, David, +3 others
Rauno
What are you using personally? I’m too old school as I continue to use jQuery! But I have very little JS need.

I’ve been contemplating to build ATS for remote companies so that would be a place where I’d need to become more modern… React, or at least Vue on Laravel.
David
Still choosing! Had a play with next.js and just started looking at vue.js. Can’t believe vue pulled in a bunch of basic string manipulation functions that each have their own npm package.

I’m seriously tempted to just use jquery tbh, with a hand rolled bunch of lambda@edge functions for the backend. Much smaller attack surface.
David
wow, jquery has a worse track record than I expected
Oleks
Hey-ho! Newbie here. Just about to launch my first micro saas . Simple landing page is ready, now will go through the dull process of submitting it everywhere. Question tho to more experienced microfounders: Is it a good idea to submit my landing page everywhere even through it only has an email capture form?
(Thank you Rauno for the microfounders site and community, it has inspired me to start this project :slightly_smiling_face: )
Rauno, Oleks, +21 others
Oleks
This project is exiting for me because I decided to use brand new shiny stack for it ( nuxt.js, adonisjs and tailwind), and not host it on a regular DO droplet, but use and forget about sshing and setting up everything manually.
Rauno
Hey Oleksii, nice landing page!

You can definitely try submitting it to different places (not sure what sites you have in mind exactly) but don’t be sad when not too many people subscribe their email (can be hard to get noticed/upvotes on Reddit/HN/etc with a landing page)

But seeing the feature list you plan, it seems like a very interesting/useful/necessary tool and I’m sure many people would be interested in it (I mean, Julien is making $11k+ now with NotionForms)
Rauno
One thing that comes to my mind now is this: I know that Julien got some initial traction from Notion groups (FB, Reddit, etc) with the MVP + also SEO started to work almost from the beginning (good domain + first backlinks from these FB etc groups)

What if you could build some mini-apps or initial versions of these functionalities and post these to Notion groups on Reddit etc. These could be free (in the beginning at least) and would have much higher chance to get noticed and upvoted.

Each of the functionality could have a separate subpage on your site which starts to be indexed by Google.

Also see how Julien describes the built-in “virality”. You could do the same but not just with forms, but with other functionality as well

Currently, the MF website is mainly a place to discover other microstartups (read Q&A with the founder, see their revenue.)

But I'd like to start exploring some other use cases to make MF more like a platform.

The first thing I'd like to try is "Updates" – it can be quite lonely to build a startup as a solo dev, would be fun to see what you're building!
