Back in 2010, I was looking for an alternative to Quicken that is 1) simple and without fluff 2) designed elegantly like my Mac. I couldn't find any, so I set out to create my own.

How did you find your first customers?
Yi
I was lucky in that my Mac app launched at the same time as a the Mac App Store, and immediately, I was earning $3-$4k a month. That level of sales didn't continue however.

How are you finding your customers today?

One success I've had is a cold outreach to Setapp (https://setapp.com), which is a Mac apps subscription service. After becoming a part of Setapp, my user base (and income) doubled over night.
Now, I am working on using content marketing and networking to drive traffic to my site, instead of just relying on the App Store to bring new users.

What's your advice for other microfounders who want to get started?
Yi
Definitely have a marketing mindset from the very beginning. Although building a great product is important, you need to spend at least 50% of you time thinking about how to get the word out about your product. If it's not you doing the marketing, at least partner with somebody who can do that for you.
